This illy Classico beans review is for anyone who’s spotted the small illy tin in the coffee aisle and wondered whether it’s worth paying a bit more than for a big bag. Classico is illy’s medium roast, sold as whole beans in a 250g pressurised tin in a mild, all-Arabica style. I haven’t tested this in person. My verdict is based on what illy and the retailers list, dated UK prices, owner ratings and the sources I name and link below, and I’ll be clear about where the evidence runs out.

It’s £7.99 at illy’s own UK shop (price at time of research, 28 Sep 2026), and it’s worth checking the supermarkets too, as I couldn’t confirm their prices.

Who it isn’t for: anyone who gets through a lot of beans. At about £3.20 per 100g at illy UK, it costs more per 100g than Lavazza Qualità Oro in its 1kg bag.

Skip it if you want a coffee that’s been through an independent taste test. I couldn’t find one for Classico beans, so the listed details and a modest amount of owner feedback are all there is to go on.

These are for the 250g tin of whole beans. The only price I could confirm comes from illy’s own UK page.

I couldn’t match the supermarket prices I found to this exact tin with confidence, so I’ve left them out rather than risk quoting the wrong product. Prices for coffee move around a lot between shops, so it pays to compare a few on the day.

What’s in the tin: the listed details

illy sells Classico as whole beans in a 250g pressurised can, and says it’s made in Trieste, Italy, from coffee grown outside the EU. Trolley.co.uk’s 500g listing describes it as a blend of nine Arabica origins. It’s 100% Arabica with a medium roast, and illy gives it an intensity of 5 on its own 9-point scale.

The tasting notes illy and the listings give are caramel, orange blossom and jasmine, with a sweet finish and a smooth cup. I’m passing those on as the brand’s description rather than my own verdict. The listings suggest it works black or with milk.

illy doesn’t list a cups-per-tin figure, so I haven’t worked out a cost per cup.

The tin, freshness and certification

The pressurised tin is the practical selling point. illy says it helps keep the beans fresh until you open it, and at 250g you’ll get through it far faster than a 1kg bag. That makes it a good fit for lighter drinkers or anyone who likes to rotate between different beans.

On ethics, illy is a certified B Corp, according to Trolley.co.uk. That’s a certification for the company as a whole, not a farm-level mark, and I didn’t see a Fairtrade or Rainforest Alliance logo on the listings.

Who it isn’t for: anyone who specifically wants Fairtrade or Rainforest Alliance beans, or anyone who drinks enough that a small tin every few days gets expensive.

What reviewers and owners say

I looked for independent UK tests of Classico beans from Which?, BBC Good Food, The Guardian, The Independent and Good Housekeeping and couldn’t find one. That includes the Guardian’s Filter coverage, such as its September 2025 supermarket coffee round-up, where I couldn’t find illy Classico beans. A few blog and affiliate reviews turned up, but I haven’t leaned on them.

Owner feedback is the next best thing. On Trolley.co.uk, the 500g bag of illy Classico beans has 5.0 out of 5 from 21 reviews across three shops (checked 28 Sep 2026). That’s a very positive score, but 21 reviews is a small sample, and it’s for the bigger bag rather than the 250g tin. illy’s own page didn’t show a star rating that I could use. Owner ratings also aren’t the same as a side-by-side expert test.

Who it isn’t for: anyone who won’t buy beans without an expert verdict. If that’s you, a specialist roaster with published reviews is a safer bet.

illy Classico vs Lavazza Qualità Oro

These are two Italian brands, and on paper they have a lot in common.

• Price per 100g: about £3.20 for the illy 250g tin at illy UK against about £2.10 to £2.37 for the Lavazza 1kg bag at the shops I could confirm (price at time of research, 28 Sep 2026; the Lavazza figures come from the brand site and via Trolley.co.uk).
• Pack: illy’s 250g pressurised tin against Lavazza’s 1kg bag.
• Beans and roast: both are 100% Arabica with a medium roast, as listed. Each brand rates intensity on its own scale, so those numbers don’t compare directly.
• Owner ratings on Trolley.co.uk: 5.0 out of 5 from 21 reviews for the illy 500g bag; 4.8 out of 5 from 8 reviews for the Lavazza 1kg bag (both checked 28 Sep 2026). Both samples are small.
• Independent tests: I couldn’t find one for either.
